Associate computer science professor Chris Bregler is studying whether potential security threats can be identified via unique patterns of movement. How might someone walk if he was carrying a bomb in his backpack?
A person's body moves differently when it must compensate for some unnatural burden, such as a heavy backpack or even high-heeled shoes, says Bregler, who performs much of his research out of N.Y.U.'s Movement Lab, a motion-capture studio and research group housed at the school's ITP Tisch School of the Arts. When a person is weighed down by a backpack, for example, his or her feet will strike the ground with greater force than they otherwise would. Yet a person with natural-grown weight learns how to counterbalance it and maintain an even stride, he adds.
Bregler and his team have identified certain movement signatures with the help of the same motion-capture technology used for special effects in the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies. Reflective markers placed at various locations on a special motion-capture suit can be picked up by a series of cameras that Bregler places in a circle around the Movement Lab. As a person in the suit moves, the cameras capture information about the reflective markers and feed the data to software that maps the location of each marker on a computer screen.
Outside the laboratory, however, the real world poses problems for motion-capture research?there simply are not enough motion-capture suits for everyone to wear. As a result, Bregler's team is developing software that can detect a person's motion signature without the markers.
Their GreenDot project trains cameras to scan the surroundings and identify spots that are unique, such as the way light reflects off a shirt's button differently than it does off the shirt's fabric. These spots are then represented as green dots on the computer screen. "Wherever you have texture [the software] can find something and track it from frame to frame," Bregler says. GreenDot's objective is to program a computer to recognize a person based on his or her motions. The software should even be able to identify a person's emotional state, cultural background, and other attributes based on movement.
Bregler's motion-analysis research attracted the attention of the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in 2000 as a possible means of identifying security threats. Following 9/11 his researched ramped up thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Office of Naval Research. Law enforcement and counterterrorism organizations already had facial-recognition technology but were looking for additional ways to better make sense of countless hours of surveillance footage.
New York City's Police Department and Mayor Michael Bloomberg's security staff also expressed an interest in Bregler's research in 2004. "They asked us if we could detect suicide bombers, and that's why we started the experiment studying artificial weight," he says.
Facial recognition has in recent years matured to the point where it is useful but only if the subject is within six or so meters from the camera, Bregler says. "That's why we're working on something called intrinsic biometrics, which studies your body patterns, your timing, the way you walk, the way you use your hands when you speak," he adds. "These are very hard to fake."
Based on the decade or so it took for facial recognition to become reliable, Bregler estimates intrinsic biometrics is years away from maturity. Ten years after facial recognition started yielding meaningful results, it has moved beyond the realm of security and is being used by Facebook, Google, Apple's iPhoto and a number of other commercial applications. "We are just starting with intrinsic biometrics so estimating from the past it probably takes five to 10 more years before it becomes as accurate as facial recognition and other biometrics," he adds.

Thursday's market meltdown came after weeks of worries that Europe's debt crisis could freeze the global financial system, and a day after the Federal Reserve disappointed markets with its latest effort to boost the economy by lowering long-term borrowing costs. The Fed also spooked investors with a particularly stark assessment of the U.S. economic outlook.
"Global growth worries today are even more prominent than the sovereign crisis, and that's not because sovereign crisis risk has diminished, it's because global growth worries have clearly increased," said Patrick Moonen, equity strategist at ING Investment Management.
World stocks as measured by MSCI (.MIWD00000PUS) hit a 13-month low and were last down 4.7 percent, bringing the year-to-date loss to 16.3 percent.
The decline also came amid concerns that the U.S. government is headed for another budget fight. The House of Representatives unexpectedly defeated a bill that would fund the federal government past September 30.

The Fed's statement that the U.S. economy faces "significant downside risks" and worry that the U.S. central bank's $400 billion program would be insufficient to jump-start growth brought fears of another global recession to the forefront.

U.S. stocks lost more than 3 percent, extending losses for a fourth straight session, and European shares slumped to a 26-month closing low.

Simply put, we would not be here today at the precipice of such a dangerous move if the Obama Policy in the Middle East wasn?t na?ve, arrogant, misguided and dangerous.
It must be said, first, that Israel is our oldest and strongest democratic ally in the Middle East and has been for more than 60 years. The Obama Policy of moral equivalency which gives equal standing to the grievances of Israelis and Palestinians, including the orchestrators of terrorism, is a dangerous insult.
There is no middle ground between our allies and those who seek their destruction. America should not be ambivalent between the terrorist tactics of Hamas and the security tactics of the legitimate and free state of Israel. By proposing ?indirect talks? through the U.S. rather than between Palestinian leaders and Israel, this administration encouraged the Palestinians to shun direct talks.

Third, by injecting the issue of 1967 borders in addition to a construction freeze in East Jerusalem and Israeli settlements, the Obama Administration has put Israel in a position of weakness and taken away their flexibility to offer concessions as part of the negotiation process.
Indeed, bolstered by the Obama Administration?s policies and apologists at the U.N., the Palestinians are exploiting the instability in the Middle East hoping to achieve their objective without concessions or direct negotiations with Israel.
The reason is simple: if they perceive they can get what they want from the U.N. without making any concessions why should they negotiate with Israel?
While the administration is right to finally agree to fight the Arab resolution at the U.N., it bears repeating that we wouldn?t be here today if they had stuck to some basic principles concerning Palestinian statehood:
First, Palestinian leaders must publicly affirm Israel?s right to exist, and to exist as a Jewish state;
Second, President Abbas must persuade all factions including Hamas to renounce acts of terrorism and release kidnapped Israeli Gilad Shalit, and;
Third, Palestinian statehood must be established only through direct negotiations between the Palestinian leadership and the nation of Israel.
By not insisting on these principles, the Obama Administration has appeased the Arab Street at the expense of our own national security interests. They have sowed instability that threatens the prospects of peace.
Israel?s security is critical to America?s security. We must not forget it was Israel that took out the nuclear capabilities of Iraq in 1981 and Syria in 2007. In both instances, their actions made the free world safer.
Today, the greatest threat to the security of Israel and, by extension, a threat to America, is the Iranian government developing a nuclear arsenal. One thing is clear: we must stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Economic sanctions must be tightened and increased and all options must remain on the table to stop a brutally repressive regime from acquiring a nuclear capability.
To date, we have fumbled our greatest opportunity for regime change. As average Iranian citizens were marching on Tehran in the Green Revolution in 2009, America was wasting precious time on a na?ve policy of outreach to both the Iranian and Syrian governments.
Who knows what the leadership of Iran would look like today if America had done everything in its power to provide diplomatic and moral support to encourage the growing movement of dissidents who sought freedom.
Our actions in recent years have destabilized the Middle East. We have been complacent in encouraging revolt against hostile governments in Iran and Syria and we have been slow to recognize the risks posed by the new regime in Egypt and the increasingly strained relationship between Israel and Turkey.
It is vitally important for America to preserve alliances with moderate Muslim regimes and Muslim leaders who seek to preserve peace and stability in the region. But today, neither adversaries nor allies alike, know where America stands.
Our muddle of a foreign policy has created greater uncertainty in the midst of the ?Arab Spring.? And our policy of isolating and undermining Israel has only encouraged our adversaries in their aggression.
With the end-run on Palestinian statehood imminent before the U.N., America must act swiftly.
First, every nation within the U.N. must know America stands with Israel and the Oslo accord principle of direct negotiations without equivocation.
Second, America must make it clear that a declaration of Palestinian Statehood in violation of the spirit of the Oslo accords could jeopardize our funding of U.N. operations.
Third, the Palestinians must know their gambit comes with consequences in particular that America will have to reconsider the $4 billion in assistance we have provided to the Palestinians over the last 17 years.
Fourth, we should close the PLO office in Washington if the U.N. grants the standing of a Palestinian state.
And fifth, we must signal to the world, including nations like Turkey and Egypt whom we have considered allies in recent years, that we won?t tolerate aggression against Israel.
Israel is our friend and ally. I have traveled there several times, and met with its leaders. It is not a perfect nation, but its existence is critical to America?s security in the world.
It is time to change our policy of appeasement toward the Palestinians to strengthen our ties to the nation of Israel, and in the process establish a robust American position in the Middle East characterized by a new firmness and a new resolve.
If America does not head off the aggression of forces hostile to Israel we will only embolden them.
That would be a tragic mistake.

MANGUM, Okla. ? Seventeen years after the wife of an Oklahoma prison warden disappeared with a convicted killer, jurors on Monday finally began to deliberate whether she was kidnapped or ran away with him to build a new life on an east Texas chicken ranch.
Bobbi Parker's long, winding trial took the entire summer to complete. It included nearly 80 witnesses and more than 800 pieces of evidence in an effort to reconstruct their high-profile disappearance on Aug. 30, 1994.
Jurors face one central question: Did she fall in love with now-dead Randolph Franklin Dial or did Dial drug the woman and take her from the Oklahoma State Reformatory as his hostage?
The jury got the case Monday evening and deliberated for about an hour before quitting until morning. District Judge Richard Darby has set aside motel rooms for the jurors during deliberations and is providing for meals.
Because of Greer County's small population, and the fact that the prison is the community's largest employer, it took weeks to pick a jury prior to the 2 1/2 months needed to present evidence.
"I've not been involved in a trial that has lasted this long," said Assistant District Attorney David Thomas, the lead prosecutor. "There are so many witnesses."
After a tip to a television anti-crime show, police captured Dial April 4, 2005, in Campti, Texas, and found Parker working in a nearby chicken house. Both maintained Dial kidnapped the woman, but Oklahoma authorities filed charges against Parker the day before the statute of limitations ran out on a claim that she helped him leave.
As closing arguments began Monday, assistant prosecutor Eric Yarborough said there was no evidence Parker was intoxicated or drugged as defense attorney Garvin Isaacs had claimed.
"The intoxication in this case was love," Yarborough said. "She chose freedom with Randolph Franklin Dial. Was it a good choice? Probably not. Was it a bad choice? Absolutely."
Reviewing photos of items taken from Dial and Parker's mobile home ? including love letters, condoms and a sex toy ? Yarborough said Dial and Parker lived together as husband and wife. Even before his escape, the prosecutor said, an inmate saw Dial and Parker behaving inappropriately while working "day in, day out" in a prison pottery program she ran from her garage.
Isaacs described Dial as a "sick, sociopathic egomaniac" and questioned why Parker would leave her family, including her two daughters.
"That won't fit. Bobbi Parker isn't' going to do anything that will break up her family," Isaacs said.
Isaacs displayed photos of Parker's family on a projection screen and said she's "a mother who loves her daughters."
Isaacs questioned the testimony of several prosecution witnesses who said they saw Parker and Dial together in inappropriate situations. Those witnesses include former Oklahoma State Reformatory Warden Jack Cowley, who testified he saw Parker and Dial on a front porch swing at the deputy warden's house.
"That didn't happen. She was never on the front porch drinking coffee with Randolph Franklin Dial," Isaacs said.
Parker's husband was present Monday for part of closing arguments, and has watched other portions of the trial.
Isaacs promised the jury during openings that Parker would testify in her own defense, but she never took the stand.
"The farther I got into this, the more concerned I became about the trauma. I couldn't do it," Isaacs explained.
Jury selection took nearly two months, as the judge disallowed anyone who worked at the prison or who knew anyone who worked at the prison. Lawyers also subpoenaed 200 potential witnesses, further reducing the pool in a county that has only 6,000 residents. By comparison, jury selection in the murder trial of Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols in 2004 took only nine days. The entire Casey Anthony murder trial in Florida this summer took eight weeks.
The prosecution's first witness, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agent Robert Williams, was on the witness stand for 14 days as he identified dozens of pieces of evidence collected from the cramped mobile home where Parker and Dial lived and defended his unit's investigation against claims that crucial witnesses weren't questioned and vital evidence wasn't tested.
"It's an unusual, complicated deal," said Isaacs. "Witnesses have died. Evidence has been destroyed. Memories have been contaminated. Facts have been forgotten."
A dust devil hit the courthouse one afternoon, knocking out power, and while stifling triple-digit heat didn't delay work it at least made everyone uncomfortable. At one point, the judge chided attorneys that they were just taking too long.
"It's unfortunate that this trial is causing inconveniences for so many people," Darby said. The judge said much of the testimony has been repetitive and repeats or reinforces that of other witnesses.
Parker, now 49, worked with Dial in the pottery program and prosecutors claim she became Dial's mistress while her husband Randy served as deputy warden and the couple lived with their two daughters in a house on the prison grounds.
Dial was serving a life term for first-degree murder for the 1981 death of a karate instructor in Tulsa County. Isaacs has described Dial as a manipulative sociopath and told Parker's jury during his opening statement that Dial drugged and kidnapped Parker and held her hostage by threatening to use his alleged mob connections to harm her family, including her daughters, if she ran away.
Parker has pleaded not guilty to the felony charge of assisting a prisoner to escape and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Legal complications, including the substitution of statements by witnesses who have died and are unavailable to provide direct testimony, have prompted Isaacs to repeatedly ask that the charge against Parker be dismissed. Darby has denied all of the requests.
Dial pleaded guilty to escape before he died in prison in 2007 at the age of 62 and maintained until his death that he kidnapped Parker and held her against her will.
But prosecutors allege that Dial and Parker made a pact that if either was discovered, he would say he kidnaped her and held her hostage. In a letter he wrote from prison after he was recaptured, Dial said: "I'll do anything to see her in the clear of all this." In another, he said: "Who cares how many years I get? With my life sentence, who's counting? Not me."

When police investigated the Realtor didn?t even have their names ? now that is well screened.
The reality of selling your own home boils down to this ? and this alone. If you can put together a decent marketing plan, properly price your home and are semi-personable without being overbearing you can sell your own home and save significant dollars. Should you be careful about whom you are letting into your home ? of course. Is there risk ? yes ? there is always risk. Is there reward ? of course ? significant. The trick is to mitigate risk by being careful and using your instincts and, as always ? be careful whom you are letting into your front door.

Whole life insurance is designed to provide protection for the entire life of the person insured. Cash values accumulate within the policy, money that the policy-owner can borrow against if desired. Also known as permanent- or ordinary insurance, these policies pay their face amount upon the death of the insured or when he or she reaches the age of 100, whichever happens first. Insurance companies consider this age to be the ?whole life? of an individual (thus the policy?s name). Below are several common types of whole life policies.
Continuous premium whole life is the most common type of whole life insurance sold. As the name implies, these policies stretch the premium payments over the whole life of the insured (up to age 100). This type of policy is also routinely referred to as straight life insurance.
Limited payment whole life insurance affords the policy-owner the same full lifetime protection of continuous premium whole life, but without the perpetual payments. In other words, the policy-owner simply pays for the entire policy in a shorter period of time. (The premium for any whole life policy can be broken down into any desired number of installments.) Because the limited payment policy is fully paid sooner than a straight life policy, logic dictates that its annual premiums are higher than those of the straight life plan. With the accelerated premiums, the cash values of limited payment policies also build at a faster rate. This means that the loan value for a limited payment policy would be more than that of a straight life policy owned for the same amount of time.
Some common forms of limited payment whole life include 20-payment life (which means that premium payments are spread out over 20 years), 30-payment, and life paid-up at age 65 (the premiums are fully paid at age 65, but the policy continues to provide lifetime coverage). These policies mature (or pay out) at age 100 or upon the death of the insured, whichever occurs first.
Single premium whole life is a very specialized and extreme version of the limited payment plan, paying for the full policy with only one premium. Of course, this single payment could very well be many thousands of dollars. The advantage offered by a single premium policy is that the policy-owner pays less than if the premiums were stretched over many years. On the other hand, the risk of this type of policy is that the person insured could die shortly after the single premium was paid, thus making the cost of the insurance coverage much higher than it might have been had the premiums been scheduled over a long period of time.
Single premium whole life policies fall into the category of Modified Endowment Contracts (MECs). There are major tax consequences to be considered when purchasing a single premium policy, or any type of MEC.
Current assumption whole life policies (also known as interest-sensitive whole life) offer flexible premium payments that are indexed to the movements of current interest rates. The insurance company can increase or decrease the policy?s premium within a certain range depending upon the fluctuation of market rates. During periods of relatively high rates, premiums could be reduced. In times of low interest rates, premiums could be increased within certain limits. Premium adjustments are generally only made on an annual basis, however.

National Planning Minister Armida Alisjahbana said the fresh money for the economic stimulus might be used to finance infrastructure projects.
BI officials said earlier the government?s 6.7% target for Y 2012 could be achieved if the economy?s focus is shifted to the domestic economy in order to lower dependency on external factors, and if the government speeds up budget disbursement, creating a multiplier effect on the Country?s economy.
