Stephen Colbert on Mitt Romney: Possible Serial Killer!

Stephen Colbert does not want to disturb you, but the leading candidate for the Republication Presidential nomination might be a serial killer.

The Comedy Central host, who is actually running in the upcoming South Carolina Primary, makes this startling accusation in a new ad from his Super PAC, one in which narrator John Lithgow follows Mitt Romney's own line of reasoning to its logical conclusion.

Colbert/Romney

If corporations are people, as Romney famously said at a campaign event last year, and if Romney gutted a number of businesses during his days in the private sector, well... what other conclusion can be draw?

On ABC’s This Week today, Colbert was asked by George Stephanopoulos whether he truly believes Romney is a serial killer and replied: “That’s a question he has to answer."

Watch the commercial below and decide: Does it cross a line? Or is it a perfect form of satire?

Epstein not counting Cubs out for next season

By ANDREW SELIGMAN

updated 8:29 p.m. ET Jan. 14, 2012

CHICAGO - For all the talk about the Chicago Cubs' future, Theo Epstein isn't ready to write them off for next season.

The club's new president of baseball operations says the Cubs just might surprise a few people even though there are question marks on the roster and holes in the farm system.

Epstein sees each season as a "sacred opportunity to win" and insists the Cubs "have more talent than we're given credit for."

"Check back in the middle of the season," Epstein said Saturday during a question-and-answer session with fans at the Cubs Convention. "We might just have the ability to really surprise some people, do some damage in the National League Central."

Chicago is undergoing a major overhaul, and a quick turnaround appears unlikely. There were some rumblings the Cubs were eyeing Prince Fielder, particularly after they hired manager Dale Sveum from Milwaukee's staff, but don't count on that.

"There haven't been any discussions with us with Prince," said Sveum, the Brewers' hitting coach the past three seasons after serving as their bench coach and third-base coach. "He's a heck of a player. He's probably one of my favorite guys that I've ever coached, but that's just not going to happen. We have a first baseman in Bryan LaHair and (prospect Anthony) Rizzo waiting in the wings as well. We're doing OK with big power, left-handed hitters right now."

They're OK in their fans' eyes, too.

There's a big sense of optimism surrounding the Cubs as they try to break a championship drought that dates to 1908. Long-suffering fans are hopeful that Epstein along with new general manager Jed Hoyer can turn things around and help bring home that elusive title, just as they did in Boston.

They see a plan. They see a roster getting overhauled. They see reason to have hope, and right there with them are the owners, the Ricketts family.

Chairman Tom Ricketts said, "2011 wasn't what we wanted it to be on the field, but off the field, we've added some people that I think will get the organization going in the right direction. And I think we have a bright future."

He said president Crane Kenney was the one who actually requested permission from Boston to speak to Epstein, and after negotiations began, they flew him in for a clandestine meeting in Chicago. The secret got out when a fan spotted Epstein at a Starbucks and told the Chicago Tribune.

"We were so secret," Ricketts said. "We flew him in secretly, we picked him up secretly, all these things. And then he hops out of the car to get an iced coffee. If you're going to go to Starbucks, why didn't you just fly in on United and put up a billboard?"

That misstep aside, Ricketts knew he was the man for the job. The task is no small one.

Management has already started gutting the roster, with Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Pena and Carlos Zambrano gone. The Cubs have been stocking up on prospects along with young and inexpensive players with major league experience, beefing up the farm system while hoping low-risk investments pay big dividends.

"We'll be scratching and clawing, trying to acquire as many assets as we can," Epstein said. "Very bluntly, we don't have enough of them. We don't have enough good players. We don't have enough young players. We don't have enough players whose contributions on the field exceed or match their salary, so we're going to be scrapping and clawing to acquire those guys as we feel that they can maximize our competitiveness now and create that foundation for long-term success."

The Cubs have made a big commitment to their minor league system and scouting. They have an academy in the Dominican Republic in the works, hoping to tap into a fertile market, and although Epstein said the system is deeper than he expected, it is a bit thin at the higher levels.

"There aren't necessarily a lot of high-impact players that are close to the big leagues," Epstein said. "If there were, it would be one of the best systems in baseball. We're not. There's a lot of room for improvement, a lot of work to do to get where we want to be, but there are a number of interesting players. ... We do have a lot of depth, albeit at the lower levels. I think with a few more acquisitions and prospects and a solid draft, you're going to see our system start to creep up into the upper third ? which is a nice place to be."

NOTES: Tom Ricketts had little to say about a sexual assault allegation against star shortstop Starlin Castro, other than he hopes it gets resolved quickly. ... The Cubs announced they are adding the "Budweiser Patio" in the right-field bleacher section for the upcoming season. The plan calls for a 75-foot long LED board that will show information such as the pitch count along with a player's picture and statistics. The patio will accommodate groups of 50, 100 or 150 guests with seats and standing-room only tickets that will include all-inclusive food and beverage packages. ... Kenney, the president of business operations, also said the Cubs remain committed to renovating Wrigley Field rather than building a new ballpark. "We're here for good," he said.

NYC man admits forging art appraisal documents (AP)

NEW YORK ? A New York City man who unwittingly sold fake art prints he believed were by British artist Damien Hirst has pleaded guilty to forging appraisal documents.

Richard Silver bought the prints from an Irvine, Calif., man online in 2006 for about $40,000. He resold them for $84,000.

A defense lawyer said Friday that Silver didn't know the prints were fake until after he'd sold them.

The lawyer says Silver had some works appraised to get shipping insurance and altered the appraisal documents to match the rest of the prints so he could ship quickly. He says Silver didn't mean to defraud anybody.

Silver pleaded guilty Thursday to misdemeanor forgery and false-filing charges. He also admitted not reporting profits on his state taxes. He's expected to be sentenced next week to 60 days in jail and ordered to pay restitution.

Another Groupon rival pulls back on deals effort (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Online retailer Rue La La, has stepped back from its Rue Local daily deal business, the latest Groupon Inc rival to hit trouble.

Rue Local, which offered daily deals in cities including New York, Los Angeles and Washington D.C., is outsourcing its sales force to another company, a spokeswoman said on Friday. She declined to identify the company.

Smartbargains.com, another business run by Rue La La, will be consolidated into the main company, she added.

The changes resulted in an 11 percent reduction in jobs at Rue La La, which is part owned by eBay Inc, the spokeswoman said.

Several Groupon rivals have ratcheted back efforts to compete in recent months. Part of the problem is that the creation of daily deals involves hiring a large and costly sales force to contact merchants and negotiate discounts.

Facebook ended an early attempt at daily deals last year and Google outsourced the creation of deals to other daily deal companies. Yelp reduced the number of deals it offered.

Rue La La's main business is flash sales, which are heavily discounted online sales of high-end apparel and other items for limited time periods.

The company "has continued to see dramatic growth with nearly $300 million in sales in 2011 and similar growth planned for 2012 and beyond," the Rue La La spokeswoman said on Friday.

Stocks up on U.S. outlook, crisis checks euro (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? European stocks rose and the euro stayed under pressure on Tuesday as investors weighed the debt turmoil in the euro zone against an improved U.S. economic picture that looks set to deliver upbeat corporate results.

European shares gained from the start on Tuesday, led by mining stocks after forecast-beating results from U.S. aluminum producer Alcoa (AA.N) improved the outlook for commodities.

"A good start to the earnings season; it shows the demand outlook is not so bad and we could get more positive surprises," Mike Lenhoff, chief strategist and head of research at Brewin Dolphin Securities, said.

The key FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index was up 1.3 percent at 1,021.47 points, while the STOXX Europe 600 euro zone banking index (.SX7P) gained around 2.0 percent.

Nervous currency markets remained focused on the outlook for the euro zone economy, upcoming government debt sales and how the region's banks will raise much needed capital to repair their balance sheets.

The euro rose slightly to trade around $1.2792, holding firmly above the 16-month lows of $1.2666 hit on Monday, due mainly to traders buying back the currency to square their positions after recent heavy selling.

The Bank of France focused attention on the ailing euro zone economy by reporting growth had stalled at zero in the fourth quarter of 2011 in the region's second-biggest economy.

But separate data showed French industrial production rose 1.1 percent in November, bucking expectations for no growth as output from refineries rose from weak levels of a year ago during strikes.

"There's short-covering and a bit of risk appetite with positive equity markets overnight," said Niels Christensen, currency strategist at Nordea in Copenhagen.

"But we have the debt auctions, the ECB meeting on Thursday and it's still a weak and vulnerable euro..., with no sign of a quick solution to the debt problems in the euro zone," he said.

The worries about the health of the region's banks saw commercial lenders' overnight deposits held at the European Central Bank hit another record high of 482 billion euros.

The banks are awash with cash after taking an unprecedented 489 billion euros in the ECB's first-ever three-year liquidity operation late last month, but they are still uncertain about what to do with the money in the longer term.

French banks were also likely to be in the spotlight after an internal memo obtained by Reuters on Monday showed Societe Generale (SOGN.PA) is forecasting a sharp drop in investment bank revenue in 2012, weighed by higher funding costs and efforts to slash its balance sheet.

AUSTRIAN EXPOSURE

Earlier, data showed China's exports and imports grew at their slowest pace in more than two years in December. The figures fuelled expectations of more policy action from Beijing to support the world's second biggest economy, and most Asian markets gained on Tuesday.

Wall Street ended slightly higher on Monday in a light-volume session as investors stayed cautious ahead of the earnings season that kicked off with Alcoa.

Tuesday's focus in euro zone debt markets will mainly be on Austria's auction of 1.3 billion euros of 10-year bonds which should give an indication of how worried investors are about the country's exposure to neighboring Hungary, which is locked in a dispute with the IMF over international aid.

Bund futures were slightly lower in midmorning trade.

Elsewhere, British retailers finished 2011 with the best sales growth in months as hefty discounting lured in shoppers, while weak business a year earlier flattered the figures, the British Retail Consortium said on Tuesday.

It added that it expected another tough year.

WebMD CEO Gattinella resigns

(AP) ? WebMD Health Corp. shares plunged Tuesday morning after the healthcare information website said CEO Wayne T. Gattinella has resigned, and it expects earnings to drop this year.

The New York company also said it has stopped talking to potential acquirers about a possible sale of the company.

Shares plunged 29 percent, or $10.63 to $26.10 in morning trading.

WebMD provides health and benefits information to employees at 121 companies and health plans.

Chief Financial Officer Anthony Vuolo will serve as interim CEO while the company looks for a permanent replacement. Vuolo also serves as chief operating officer, and that responsibility will be taken over by members of a newly formed management committee that will work with the interim CEO.

The company says its 2012 revenue may fall by 2 percent to 8 percent as some of its drug company customers deal with patent losses that hurt revenue by exposing their products to generic competition. WebMD also expects expenses to rise in the new year and that its earnings will be "significantly lower" than in 2011.

"While we face near-term challenges, I am confident that there is significant growth opportunity ahead for Web MD," Chairman Martin J. Wygood said in a statement from the company. "I believe that the pressure facing the pharmaceutical industry will ultimately prove to be the strong catalyst for a meaningful shift by them to digital marketing solutions."

The company will offer more details on its 2012 expectations Feb. 23, when it reports on fourth-quarter and full-year earnings.

WebMD said a special committee of independent directors has had discussions with several potential acquirers but has ended the talks and its review of a possible sale of the company. Billionaire investor Carl Icahn took a 9.5 percent stake in WebMD in November, and his firm, Icahn Capital LP, has said it opposes a sale.

In November, the company announced third-quarter results that missed analyst expectations and cut its revenue estimates for the fourth quarter. It earned $14.2 million, or 24 cents per share, in the quarter on $135.1 million in revenue.

WebMD, which cut its revenue outlook twice last year, said in November it expects fourth-quarter revenue to be $147 million to $157 million, which fell short of analyst expectations at the time.

Griffin PowerBlock Reserve hands-on (video)

Griffin's PowerBlock reserve is a 2000mA battery that's packing a power plug on one end and a USB port on the other, designed for weary travelers who need to get some more juice from their smartphone. If we're honest, it looks like an enormous chocolate bar, but the sort of not-delicious sort that'll push your iPhone's battery back to 80 percent from cold on a full charge. It'll cost you $59.99 for a version that comes with an USB to Apple connector cable or $49.99 if you'd rather supply your own.

Dana Murph contributed to this report.

EyeJot video business cards | Ubergizmo

I can imagine the many thousands of business cards that has changed hands at CES even in the first day itself. If you want to truly stand out from the rest of the crowd, why not look towards the future? EyeJot might be on to something here with the idea of a ?video business card?, known as the EyeJot vCard. This digital card will incorporate video alongside the relevant contact information that you want to share with others, posing as the next generation of business cards. With Eyejot?s video mail application, mobile users are able to create and send up to five unique digital contact cards instantaneously.

As for the kind of information that you want to include, it really depends on you, but make sure you do not throw in too much personal information that might be detrimental to your future job applications, especially when your potential employers check out drunk images of you partying on your social network. The Eyejot vCard will require mobile users to enter a contact?s email address and hit send, where an importable VCF will be created and include a QR barcode as well as link to a Google map of where contact was made for easy reference. You can download the EyeJot vCard app here.

Their View: Long-awaited movie remake rides into New Mexico

The Lone Ranger is galloping into New Mexico and he just can't get here quickly enough. He'll bring Johnny Depp who will portray his Native American sidekick, Tonto. One might wonder why they couldn't have found a Native American to play Tonto, but that is an argument for another day. Johnny Depp is a hugely gifted actor of unlimited character versatility. I was disappointed he passed on the Christmas season blockbuster I attended, "The Chipmunks Chipwrecked." Depp reportedly took a 20 per cent salary cut to star in "The Lone Ranger," and that is good. We all have to sacrifice in these tough times.

Many of us first saw "The Lone Ranger" in the 40s where we went to a theater maybe called The Globe, paid nine cents to get in, saw two movies, a newsreel, and a bunch of cartoons. Mom gave us an extra nickel to munch on Necco Wafers.

The movie is based on a masked fictional ex-Texas Ranger who trots around the Old West fighting injustice, Tonto always at his side. Well, bring it on! We've got plenty of injustice to battle in New Mexico, and I am not just referring to the rip-off retirement plan our legislators granted themselves in one of those rare moments of political greed.

There is another reason we should all shout "Hi-yo Silver! Away! " to the filming of "The Lone Ranger" in our Land of Enchantment. Previous New Mexico cowboy shoot 'em ups haven't all been cinematic classics. One in particular, The "Righteous and the Wicked," was so bad as to be funny from beginning

to closing credits. Check this one out on at your local Redbox, sit back and enjoy.

Some Westerns are designed to be funny. Remember Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles?" This was generally a guy flick mostly remembered for its flatulence humor appealing to us guys who go through a certain juvenile stage generally ending when we turn 87. No guarantees.

Righteous, though, sets out to be serious but turns out to be seriously funny. It was written and directed by Albuquerque native Craig Butler and most likely populated by New Mexican extras and, for all I know, maybe the leading characters as well. At any rate, Righteous is "ours" which puts the local critic in the same boat with the local small town sports editor whose high school football team, the Dragons, keeps going 1 for 8 every season.

"Despite a valiant defensive effort, the Dragons were edged 72-0 by the determined visiting Warriors in a Friday night showdown," he writes.

Truth is, the Dragons are horrible, and so is "The Righteous and The Wicked." None of the Roger Eberts of the world reviewed this one, but just about all of the hundreds of amateur reviews totaled a half star out of five.

Casting is a mystery. Check out the leader of the gang of misfits. He looks and talks more like your local bank loan officer. It's kind of like casting Woody Allen in a western and having him walk around the set calling people "pilgrim."

It may or not be righteous that this movie and "The Lone Ranger" get state taxpayer incentives. Some say that is a good program, others bristle at the idea. As for me, I'm worried about Johnny Depp. With that 20 per cent salary cut, the poor guy will likely be looking at New Mexico's food stamp program.

Look at me, playing movie critic. I'm not smart enough write and direct a movie. If I did it would be based on the life story of the community nerd. I'm thinking George Clooney for the title role.

Ned Cantwell's ? ncantwell@bajabb.com ? promising acting career hit a wall when a talented community theater director we will call "Ellen" cast him as a serious Roman soldier in The Robe and did not fully appreciate his comedic interpretation.

Merkel, Sarkozy meet amid new year of euro gloom (AP)

BERLIN ? The leaders of Germany and France are holding their first meeting of the year as the eurozone's weaker countries worry about high borrowing costs and Europe works to hammer out a treaty enshrining tougher budget rules.

Monday's meeting of Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Nicolas Sarkozy comes ahead of new Italian Premier Mario Monti's first visit to Berlin Wednesday.

Merkel and Sarkozy will travel to Italy Jan. 20 before a European summit at the end of the month.

Italy is a key focus of the crisis because of its size, huge debt load and need to borrow heavily in the first quarter. The yield on its 10-year bonds rose back above the 7 percent level that is considered a danger mark late last week.

Meanwhile, Greece's prime minister has warned of possible default if details of a second bailout aren't finalized.

This creepy Steve Jobs action figure will make you question your Apple devotion (Yahoo! News)

Jobs's legacy lives on with a 12" Levis-clad tribute doll

There are few icons in the world of technology as revered as?Apple's co-founder and longtime CEO Steve Jobs. We've seen some crazy tributes to the man who devoted his life to consumer tech ? from giant?apple-shaped marathon routes to?life-sized statues ? but none are as eerily realistic as the upcoming Steve Jobs action figure by toymaker?Inicons.

The 12" tall doll is a lovingly accurate recreation of the man who introduced the world to the?iPad and?iPhone, and his every detail has been replicated. The mini Jobs comes complete with his iconic keynote wardrobe consisting of a black turtleneck, Levis blue jeans, and of course his New Balance footwear. But the really impressive part of the tiny tribute is its almost creepily realistic facial features.

Inicons plans to market the new toy starting next month with a price tag of $99. Unfortunately, the company hasn't been able to obtain any kind of license to use Jobs's likeness, so the chances of it being immediately removed from sale are pretty high. Interested? Terramar Retail Centers Acquires Canyon Park Place for $35 Million in Bothell, Washington

CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Terramar Retail Centers, LLC has acquired Canyon Park Place, a 130,786-square-foot neighborhood retail center in Bothell, Washington in an off-market transaction. The center, prominently located within the I-405 corridor at the intersection of 228th Street and Bothell-Everett Highway, is anchored by a 45,772-square-foot QFC grocery and an 11,948-square-foot Bartell?s Drug.

?We are active investors in the marketplace and our strategy is to pursue shopping centers that will provide high-quality, stable cash flow through multiple economic cycles?

?Canyon Park Place is the dominant grocery-anchored center at the intersection that forms the hub of a major commercial region with more than 5.24 million square feet of office space surrounding the center. Additionally, Bothell is one of Seattle's most desired residential communities due to its quality of life and close proximity to major employment centers and cultural destinations in Canyon Park, Redmond, Bellevue and Seattle,? said Terramar?s Vice President of Acquisitions Matthew Smith.

?The center has a highly performing grocer and drug store, and its ability to serve the daily needs of the residents of Bothell and workers in the region has allowed it to maintain a solid track record of high occupancy and stability through this recent market downturn,? Smith said.

?Terramar is excited to add Canyon Park Place as our sixth grocery-anchored center to our existing Pacific Northwest portfolio,? said Terramar President and CEO Steve Bowers. ?This is a strategic region for Terramar and an area where we are actively seeking to expand our footprint. The center's dominant commercial location, strong trade area demographics and established tenancy with daytime and nighttime activity characterize the type of grocery-anchored centers we are aggressively targeting as we look to expand our portfolio in 2012 and beyond.?

The seller was a Seattle-based, family investment company that has owned and operated the center since they originally developed it in 1990. The seller was advised by Terry Moss of Commercial Realty Group, Inc.

Terramar is actively expanding its portfolio through acquisitions, new development and redevelopments of retail centers in its core markets in the western United States.

?We are active investors in the marketplace and our strategy is to pursue shopping centers that will provide high-quality, stable cash flow through multiple economic cycles,? Smith said. ?We are fortunate to be well-capitalized and able to close acquisitions quickly on an all-cash basis, which has proven advantageous in the current economic environment.?

Terramar recently acquired Encinitas Village, a 183,675-square-foot Class A neighborhood retail center in Encinitas, California, one of the best retail submarkets in San Diego County. The center is located at the intersection of El Camino Real and Encinitas Boulevard, and is anchored by a 43,400-square-foot Ralphs Grocery, a 25,473-square-foot CVS Drug, and an 11,000-square-foot Trader Joe?s.

Terramar has acquired, managed and leased more than 6.5 million square feet in its 15-year history. The company currently owns and operates 22 neighborhood, community, specialty and power centers. Terramar?s operating and development portfolio includes more than 3.7 million square feet of retail area throughout the western United States. Mother unaware son arrested for LA arson fires (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Shackled in handcuffs and flanked by three U.S. Marshals, Dorothee Burkhart scanned a Los Angeles courtroom looking for her son.

"Can you bring my son inside?" she pleaded with court officials. "Where is my son?"

Apparently she was unaware that less than two miles away, her 24-year-old son Harry Burkhart, also was behind bars suspected of more than 50 arson attacks over New Year's weekend that caused $3 million in damage.

Authorities believe Burkhart, angry over his mother's legal troubles, went on a nighttime rampage of burning parked cars a day after she made an initial court appearance last week.

On Tuesday, court documents were unsealed that revealed Burkhart's mother is charged in their native Germany with 19 counts of fraud, including failing to pay for a 2004 breast-augmentation surgery and pilfering security deposits from renters.

In a brief court appearance, she appeared perplexed, wondering aloud if her son had disappeared or was dead. At one point, she said, he is mentally ill and questioned whether Nazis knew where she and her son lived.

"What did you do to my son?" she asked U.S. Magistrate Judge Margaret Nagle.

"I'm not here to address anything related to your son," Nagle responded.

Both mother and son are being held without bail. Her next court hearing was delayed until Friday so she can hire an attorney, and charges could be filed against Burkhart as early as Wednesday.

Harry Burkhart was taken into custody after authorities received a tip from federal officials who recognized him in a security video that showed a pony-tailed man emerging from a garage where a car was set ablaze.

"When they saw the security footage, they recognized him and they contacted the arson task force," a State Department official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigations are ongoing.

Burkhart arrived in the U.S. in October and his non-immigrant visa is set to expire Jan. 18, authorities said. His mother last entered the country lawfully in January 2007 and she left four months later, officials said.

A federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the case, said Harry Burkhart was present when his mother was arrested Dec. 28 on a provisional arrest warrant.

Provisional arrest warrants are normally issued when there are criminal charges pending overseas against someone. Ordinarily, U.S. authorities then obtain an arrest warrant through the State Department and the Justice Department.

Burkhart had been in court Thursday afternoon at his mother's hearing when he launched into an obscenity-laden tirade, saying "F--- the United States!" said Thom Mrozek, spokesman at the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles.

Mrozek said Burkhart was detained and later escorted out of the courthouse. He said Burkhart did not make any specific threats against anyone or property at his mother's court hearing.

A law enforcement official, who requested anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said authorities believe Burkhart went on the arson spree because he was angry over his mother's legal troubles.

Outside Harry Burkhart's Hollywood apartment, some neighbors described him as a loner who loitered around the busy commercial strip at night and could be heard arguing with his mother.

But Shlomo Elady, a hair stylist who regularly trimmed Burkhart's long hair, recalled someone who spoke three languages, dreamed of visiting Jerusalem and cared for a sickly mother who had trouble walking.

Elady said he was stunned that the man who lived with his mother above his Sunset Boulevard shop is suspected of torching vehicles, some just steps from his home.

"He loved his mom, the way every son loves his mom," Elady said. "He's not a creepy guy."

Galina Illarionova, who lives in the same apartment complex as the suspect, said through a Russian translator that an agitated Burkhart visited her Sunday and said his mother was having some kind of legal problems.

He told her his mother was in trouble with authorities and wanted Illarionova to attend a legal hearing with him, but he later said he didn't need her help.

A domain name for a website offering appointment-only sensual massage is registered to Dorothee Burkhart. Her name is not mentioned on the website, which states the service is not prostitution.

The series of fires appeared to have stopped with Burkhart's arrest. The onslaught of intentionally set fires kept residents anxious over the holiday weekend in some of the most densely populated areas of the city.

One of Saturday's fires occurred at the Hollywood and Highland entertainment complex, a popular tourist destination bordered by the Walk of Fame in a neighborhood that includes Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

Damaged buildings included a former home of Doors singer Jim Morrison.

Hundreds of investigators, police officers and firefighters raced to deal with the blazes. Police conducted extra patrols all weekend, and the noise of helicopters and sirens persisted virtually nonstop in Hollywood.

The fires forced many apartment dwellers from their homes. There were no serious injuries.

Gaza's Hamas PM tours Turkish boat stormed by Israeli troops

Andreas Moser

"Target of a deadly attack by Israeli troops" is a bit misleading.

There was a blockade around Gaza, enforced mainly by Israel (also by Egypt). The ships tried to break the blockade. The Israeli Navy tried to stop the ships, they didn't stop. So the Navy entered the ships and was met with violence. In the ensuing fight, people were killed by the Israeli Navy.

A UN report confirmed that the blockade imposed by Israel was legal and that Israel had the right to stop and search the ships.

The ships were not an "aid flotilla" but a propaganda flotilla, hell-bent on seeking confrontation. They had weapons on board which shows that israel was right to stop and search these vessels.

How To Unlock and Root The Verizon Galaxy Nexus (Easy Way)

One of the nice things about the Galaxy Nexus is the ability to unlock the bootloader and install custom ROMS and modifications.

I showed you how to unlock the Galaxy Nexus already, but I found a much easier method for unlocking and rooting the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon.

Read: Galaxy Nexus Review

This guide will show you how to unlock and root the Galaxy Nexus on a Windows PC or a Mac, and takes significantly less time and effort.

Before you unlock and rot your Galaxy Nexus, know that it does void your warranty and there is a possibility of breaking your phone. If that happens we are not responsible.

What You Need

  1. Verizon Galaxy Nexus
  2. SuperBoot
  3. Samsung Driver
  4. Additional USB Drivers
  5. A Backup of your files

This process will erase?everything?on your phone. Before you unlock your phone, be sure to backup your photos and files to your computer. If you are on a Mac, you?ll need this guide to connect the Galaxy Nexus to a Mac.

How to Unlock and Root the Galaxy Nexus

Before we start, turn on USB Debugging on your Galaxy Nexus by going to Settings ? > Developer Options -> Turn on USB Debugging.

1. Unzip Superboot.

2. Open the folder and copy all of those files by pressing Ctrl+A and then Ctrl+C.

3. Go to My Computer, Go to Your C: drive and create a folder called root.

4. Paste those files in this new folder.

Root

5. While in your root folder hold shift and right-click. Choose Open Command Here.

On MAC

? Open Terminal.

? Type cd C:/ and press enter.

? Type cd root.

Open command window here

6. Turn your phone off.

7. Plug it into your computer.

Unlock Galaxy Nexus Verizon Easy Way

8. Hold Volume Up, Volume Down and Power until it boots into bootloader mode. You?ll see a screen shown above.

9. If the drivers do not install correctly, you will need to open up Device Manager on your computer and choose the Samsung USB drivers.

- Unzip the Samsung Drivers you downloaded to somewhere you can find, the Desktop is a good place.

- Click Start and choose Control Panel.

- Click on System and Security

- Choose Device Manager

Once in Device Manager, look for an entry that says Android 1.0 with a yellow exclamation point next to it.

- Double click to open it up.

- Click on Update Driver.

Update Driver

- Choose Browse my computer for driver software.

- Navigate to the driver folder on your desktop and click Open.

- This should install the file and allow your computer to connect to your Galaxy Nexus.

10. Go back to the Command Prompt you opened up earlier.

11. type fastboot-windows oem unlock and hit Enter.

On Mac ? ./fastboot-mac oem unlock in Terminal

Unlock the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon

12. When your phone asks if you want to ?Unlock Bootloader?? use the volume button to choose yes and press power to select.

13. You?ll be back at the Bootloader screen, but?should?see unlocked at the bottom of your phone?s screen.

Don?t unplug or restart your phone yet

14. Open up your root folder on your computer and double click on install-superboot-windows.bat.

root Galaxy Nexus

15. Your phone should root and go to the Black Google Screen shown below.

Google Screen Root the Galaxy Nexus

16. Your phone will stay on this screen for 5 to 15 minutes. Do not pull the battery until at least fifteen minutes have passed or you could break your phone. I had to wait 15 minutes and pull the battery to get this to work.

If your phone gets stuck in the boot sequence, flashing the Google startup color sequence, do not pull the battery. Wait the 10 ? 15 minutes and try to turn off the phone by holding the power button. If all else fails, you can try?pulling?the battery, but only after you have waited 10 t 15 minutes.

You are now unlocked and rooted. If you want to know what to do next, I suggest you check out Chris?s Custom Galaxy Nexus setup.

Romney brings in Christie in Iowa final push (Reuters)

DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) ? White House hopeful Mitt Romney brought in a hired gun from New Jersey on Friday to bolster his prospects for a win in Iowa next week that would put him in the lead in the Republican presidential race.

Romney and his rivals campaigned across Iowa on a windy, rainy day to begin a final frenzy of weekend appearances before the Midwestern state launches the 2012 contest to choose a Republican nominee to face Democratic President Barack Obama in November's election.

Romney, buoyed by an NBC/Marist poll that showed him leading the field ahead of Tuesday's Iowa caucuses, was upbeat about his chances in a state that jilted him for former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee in 2008.

"This feels wonderful," Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, told Reuters as he worked a ropeline of supporters outside a grocery store in West Des Moines. "I tell you, the crowds and the enthusiasm couldn't be more wonderful."

The outcome of the caucuses is by no means certain and polls have been volatile as Iowans deliberate over who to choose as the Republican standard-bearer and the candidates jockey for position in the final days.

The NBC/Marist poll of likely caucus participants put Romney on top at 23 percent, just ahead of the 21 percent for libertarian Texas Congressman Ron Paul.

Rick Santorum, a social conservative and former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, has seen his prospects improve as influential evangelicals flock to his side. Santorum jumped to third place at 15 percent in the NBC/Marist poll, followed closely by Texas Governor Rick Perry at 14 percent.

POWERFUL SURROGATE

Romney brought a powerful surrogate to Iowa, tough-talking New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who is popular with conservatives and might shore up Romney's right wing.

Christie, who has gained a following among Republicans for taking on New Jersey's political establishment, urged a crowd of about 1,000 people to "take nothing for granted" and get out to the caucuses on Tuesday to vote for Romney.

Christie praised Romney as the best hopes of defeating Obama, who he said has not made good on his 2008 pledge to bring "hope and change" to America.

"Let me tell you, after three years of Obama, we are hopeless and changeless and we need Mitt Romney to bring us back," he said.

Christie told reporters he would not rule out joining Romney as his vice presidential running mate if Romney becomes the Republican nominee.

Former Iowa front-runner Newt Gingrich sank to 13 percent in the poll. The former House of Representatives speaker, buffeted by negative ads and attacks for weeks, got choked up talking about his mother.

"I get teary-eyed every time we sing Christmas carols," Gingrich told an event hosted at Java Joe's Coffee in Des Moines.

The candidates took shots at each other and argued they have the conservative policy ideas to help the United States trigger job growth.

"I will send a signal to our country's job creators and to the world that the days of socialist policies are over, that our free market is once again open for business," Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann told supporters in Urbandale.

The top three or four finishers in Iowa on Tuesday will have momentum heading to New Hampshire on January 10, while the rest will have to make some tough decisions on whether to continue.

Romney has shied away from going all-out in Iowa but is hoping the anti-Romney vote is splintered sufficiently among his rivals to allow him to score an upset victory and give him an aura of inevitability heading to what is essentially home turf for him in New Hampshire.

Some in the crowd at his event with Christie came for the opportunity to hear the New Jersey governor, not Romney.

"I don't want Chris Christie necessarily to run for vice president with Romney, although that would be okay, but he needs to be president, I think, Chris Christie," said John Brown of West Des Moines.

Romney, a multi-millionaire who plays down his wealth by talking about the poor conditions his father experienced, accused Obama of elitism, criticizing the president's vacation in Hawaii and likening his stewardship of the U.S. economy to 18th century French queen Marie Antoinette, who famously declared of the peasants "Let them eat cake."

Romney seized on comments Obama has made that the U.S. economy would be even weaker if stimulus measures he pushed through Congress had not been enacted.

"The other day President Obama said it could be worse, can you imagine hearing that from a pessimistic president? 'It could be worse.' That goes down with Marie Antoinette 'let them eat cake'," Romney said.

"He just finished his 90th round of golf. We've got 25 million Americans that are out of work, or stopped looking for work, or underemployed."

The Democratic National Committee said Romney's own personal wealth undermined his message.

"It is actually laughable that the "Quarter-Billion-Dollar Man" would call President Obama out of touch - and use the example of a French monarch to make the point," said DNC spokeswoman Melanie Roussell.

Polls provide insights, not voting predictions (AP)

WASHINGTON ? At this point four years ago, national polls taken in the run-up to presidential primaries said to prepare for a general election matchup between Republican Rudy Giuliani and Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In 2004, Howard Dean was coasting to the Democratic nomination to face President George W. Bush.

Neither pairing materialized.

As the past has proved, countrywide polls are hardly crystal balls, particularly for primary elections that are won state by state. National surveys give insights into what people are thinking, and why, rather than predicting how they will vote.

State-level polling close to an election can be predictive, but even that is far from precise. Voters always can change their minds and attitudes shift quickly.

So there's no guarantee that Mitt Romney or Ron Paul, who are leading in Iowa polls just days before Tuesday's leadoff Republican presidential caucuses, will win. Also, there's no certainty over whether Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich will remain at the back of the pack.

On top of that, it's hard to find true primary voters to survey because so few people vote. In 2008, a record 120,000 Republicans voted in the Iowa caucuses, but that was only 2 percent of Iowa's adults.

Consider the 2007 primary polls. As Iowa approached, most national polls said Clinton and Giuliani were the front-runners. The final Associated Press-Ipsos poll that year put Clinton solidly ahead of Barack Obama, while on the GOP side, Giuliani held a comfortable edge over the rest of the field.

But Obama won Iowa for the Democrats, as did Mike Huckabee for the Republicans.

The national polling didn't say exactly how people would vote in 2008, and 2011 polling won't reveal who will win in 2012.

But countrywide surveys do provide context and help to explain the shifting results as the primaries roll on.

In the 2008 nomination contests, polls indicated that voters were focused on the war in Iraq and deeply dissatisfied with the Bush presidency and the country's direction. Those themes said more about why Obama and Republican John McCain won their party's nomination than the head-to-head matchups did.

This year, polls have consistently shown two dominant themes in the GOP race:

_A tepid response to the GOP field among Republican voters.

Earlier this month, an AP-GfK poll found that amid Gingrich's rise, Republican dissatisfaction with the lineup of candidates also rose. The wild swings among the anyone-but-Romney crowd have lifted nearly all of the candidates at some point this year, but none has fit the bill exactly.

Republicans don't actively dislike Romney, with 73 percent saying he's a strong leader and 81 percent calling him likable. But his best showing in any poll this year remains around 30 percent, and no other candidate has pulled a strong showing among the remaining 70 percent of the party.

_A deep anger among Republicans toward Obama.

This sentiment has buoyed Romney through the rise and fall of other candidates. Poll after poll reinforces his status as the candidate who runs most competitively with Obama and is seen as the most electable. Republicans sure would like to see Obama voted out of office. In the latest AP-GfK poll, 89 percent of Republicans said he deserved to be voted out, and three-quarters said they expected him to lose.

Later this year, the Republicans' battle for voters and delegates will end and a single Republican nominee will be left standing. But no one should expect today's polling to say who that will be.
