Tomato genome sequenced

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? The tomato genome sequence -- both the domesticated type and its wild ancestor, Solanum pimpinellifolium -- has been sequenced for the first time by a large international team of scientists, including a researcher from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The sequences provide the most detailed look yet at the tomato genome, revealing the order, orientation, types and relative positions of its 35,000 genes. The sequences will help researchers uncover the relationships between tomato genes and traits and broaden their understanding of how genetics and environmental factors interact to determine a field crop?s health and viability.

The achievement -- an important tool for further development of better tomato production -- by the 300-plus-memberTomato Genome Consortium (TGC) is reported on in the May 31 issue of the journal Nature.

The consortium includes Prof. Dani Zamir of the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment of the Hebrew University.Other scientists in the project are from Argentina, Belgium, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.

When Columbus brought tomato seed from America to the old world some 500 years ago, he probably never imagined that it would be such a major contributor to human nutrition, health, culinary pleasure and international cooperation. This latest quantum leap in knowledge of the tomato genetic code (35,000 genes) provides a means to match DNA sequences with specific traits that are important for human well being or taste, such as flavor, aroma, color and yield.

Tomato is a member of the Solanaceae or nightshade family, and the new sequences are expected to provide reference points helpful for identifying important genes in tomato?s Solanaceae relatives. The group includes potato, pepper, eggplant and petunia and is among the world?s most important vegetable plant families in terms of both economic value and production volume.

Beyond improvement of the tomato, the genome sequence also provides a framework for studying closely related plants, such as potato, pepper, petunia and even coffee. These species all have very similar sets of genes, yet they look very different.

How can a similar set of "genetic blueprints" empower diverse plants with different adaptations, characteristics and economic products? This challenging question is being explored by comparing biodiversity and traits of tomato and its relatives.

The Tomato Genome Consortium started its work in 2003, when scientists analyzed the DNA sequence of tomato using the most modern equipment available at the time. Fortunately, with the recent introduction of so-called "next generation sequencing" technologies, the speed of data output increased 500-fold and enabled the project to move on efficiently to its conclusion.

Comply With Government Laws By Using Paper Shredding Services ...

augustus-corporation-law-consulting-website-law-firms.jpg

Businesses and individuals face a greater than ever threat of identity theft, corporate espionage, and fraud. Every enterprise no matter the size keeps sensitive papers at their location that will have to be disposed of safely and securely. Businesses collect a broad range of information about employees, clients, customers, finances, budgets, and product development. These are sensitive documents that could be used illegally if stolen so it is vital to have a method in place regarding secure disposal of the documents.

Governments understand the importance of protecting confidential information, and have passed legislation to ensure the security of sensitive information in order to protect businesses and consumers. Records security management has become an important task for every business. Paper shredding services or document destruction companies can provide your business with secure records management protocols, give advice on a schedule of maintenance, and make certain that your company is in compliance with up to date government regulations. Paper shredding companies provide a vital method of security regarding the information a company disposes of, and ensure sensitive information remains confidential.

Paper shredding services is the most efficient solution to destruction of sensitive documents. These documents include payroll info, health insurance records, budget and sales. Business strategic planning, product specs, vendor info, inventory lists, transaction records, etc. Paper shredding experts provide the support that a company?s needs to ensure their private papers are secure. They assist in up a retention schedule, and provide off-site and on-site document destruction services. Prior to the scheduled shredding day, a secure bin is provided to place the papers to be shredded. A secure shredder truck with an industrial shredder comes to the business location. The bins of papers are collected and shredded in the shredder that is on the back of the truck. A Certificate of Document Destruction is given to the business stating the date of destruction of the sensitive material. This is added liability protection against identity theft or compliance with government regula tions.

Many companies believe that recycling their sensitive paper documents is adequate since recycling does not meet regulations concerning confidentiality and consumer protection. A paper shredding company ensures documents are completely protected throughout the process and will recycle the shredded remains which will help protect the environment and the business in terms of regulatory mandates.

The benefit of using a professional paper shredding service is not just secure shredding but also staff will be able focus their time and effort on other important tasks. A professional paper shredding service removes the burden of maintaining and servicing an in-house shredder. As well, using office shredders is a very time consuming task as one has to stand there feeding the shredder paper by paper. Also, office shredding is not secure as there is a possibility of security breach while documents stack up waiting to be shredded. Paper shredding services is a practical, cost-efficient, and secure solution. When an enterprise hires a paper shredding service, they will comply with government laws and they will have peace of mind knowing their confidential waste will not end up in the hands of criminals.

U.S. won't charge woman who caused flight diversion

The US Airways flight from Paris to Charlotte, North Carolina, with 188 people aboard, landed safely in Bangor on Tuesday trailed by two F-15 fighter escorts that scrambled to intercept the Boeing 767 as it approached the coast.

House Finance Committee holds hearing on Property Tax Independence Act

Posted by Jackie on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

The House Finance Committee today held a hearing to gather testimony about the Property Tax Independence Act (House Bill 1776) sponsored by state Representative Jim Cox (R-Berks). While an advocate for property taxpayers enthusiastically endorsed the bill, some representatives of special interest groups who testified were less supportive.

?I think the testimony largely reflected the current situation,? Cox said. ?While homeowners stand to gain the most from this legislation and have enthusiastically supported the bill, there are business owners who see this as a way to expand their business. Of course, not every group who testified was in favor of this change because the current system is working well for them.?

David Baldinger, who serves as president of the Pennsylvania Coalition of Taxpayer Associations (PCTA), an alliance of 72 grassroots Pennsylvania taxpayer advocacy groups that represent tens of thousands of taxpayers across the Commonwealth, enthusiastically supports House Bill 1776 and its companion legislation in the state Senate (Senate Bill 1400).

The Property Tax Independence Act would replace school property tax funding for schools across the Commonwealth with new state revenues.

?No tax should have the power to leave you homeless,? Cox said. ?We have to end the practice of kicking senior citizens and widows out of their homes because they cannot afford to pay their property taxes.?

The Property Tax Independence Act would provide the same level of funding for schools across the Commonwealth as they currently receive through school property taxes. However, the plan would eliminate school property taxes and replace the funds with additional state revenues. Specifically, the bill would enhance collections through the state?s Personal Income Tax by raising it from 3.07 percent to 4 percent. It would also generate additional funds by closing loopholes in the state sales tax and raising the rate from 6 percent to 7 percent.

The plan would apply the 7 percent sales tax to clothing and footwear that cost $50 or more, non-prescription drugs and food items that are not part of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program.

In addition, it would close loopholes that currently exempt dry cleaning, funeral expenses, amusement parks and other services from the state sales tax. It would close similar loopholes that also exempt newspapers, magazines, flags, gum, candy and other goods from the sales tax.

Various special interest groups representing specific corporate sectors of the economy and levels of government also testified before the committee. The Pennsylvania Association of Realtors offered no support today for the Property Tax Independence Act or any other legislation that would reform or replace school district property taxes. A testifier representing school boards, which would lose their ability to levy property taxes under the proposal, was not supportive of the plan. Another testifier representing newspapers, which would be subject to the state sales tax under the plan, also failed to wholeheartedly endorse the proposal.

?No plan to completely replace school property taxes is going to please every special interest group,? Cox said. ?My goal with this legislation is to do what is right for homeowners and property taxpayers. I think the fact that property taxpayers overwhelmingly support the plan is a testament to how important it is to them.?

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in the capital at a military parade rehearsal which killed nearly 100 soldiers and injured at least 200.

The militant group said in an emailed statement Monday that one of its "holy warriors" carried the suicide attack and that it targeted the minister of defense who was attending the rehearsal. It says the attack is meant to take revenge for the military offensive against al-Qaida in southern Yemen.

The group known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula vowed, "This is only the beginning of Jihad," and said that its militants will continue waging attacks against the Yemeni leadership.

Monday's bombing took place when a suicide bomber dressed in military uniform blew himself up among parading soldiers.

Former Rutgers student gets 30 days in webcam spying case

A New Jersey judge sentenced ex-Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi to a 30-day jail term and recommended he not get deported back to his native India. Ravi was found guilty in March of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and other charges after using a webcam to spy on his roommate's intimate encounter with another man.

By Becky Bratu, msnbc.com

Updated?6:12 p.m. ET: A New Jersey judge on Monday sentenced a former Rutgers University student accused of using a webcam to spy on his gay roommate's love life to a 30-day probationary jail term.

Indian-born Dharun Ravi, 20, was facing up to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of bias intimidation and invasion of privacy in a case that exploded into the headlines when Ravi's roommate committed suicide. Ravi also was facing the possibility of deportation, but the judge recommended Monday that he be allowed to stay in the country.

Tyler Clementi, 18,?jumped off the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22, 2010, after finding out that Ravi?saw him kissing another man and appeared to encourage others to watch his romantic encounters through a camera on?his computer.

NBC News

Parents of Indian-born Dharun Ravi, 20, react to his sentencing for charges of bias intimidation and invasion of privacy in a case that exploded into the headlines when Ravi's roommate committed suicide.

"This individual was not convicted of a hate crime, he was convicted of a bias crime, and there's a difference," Superior Court Judge Glenn Berman said.

"I say that because I do not believe he hated Tyler Clementi. He had no reason to," Berman said, adding that Ravi's crimes were committed out of "colossal insensitivity.?

"I heard this jury say, 'guilty' 288 times -- 24 questions, 12 jurors. That's the multiplication," Berman said. "I haven?t heard you apologize once."

Ravi's sentence also includes three years of probation, 300 hours of community service and a $10,000 fine.

Prosecutors said they plan to appeal the sentence.

"While?the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office did not request?the maximum period of incarceration for?Dharun Ravi, it was expected that his conviction on multiple offenses of invading the privacy of two victims?on two separate occasions, four counts of bias intimidation against Tyler Clementi,?and the coverup of those crimes,?would warrant more than a 30-day jail term," Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan said in a statement.

As Clementi's father, brother, and mother addressed the court, holding back tears at times, the image that emerged was of a "vulnerable" Tyler "shaken by the cold, criminal actions of his roommate.?

"Nobody other than Tyler understood how vulnerable he was," Tyler's father Joseph Clementi said.?"We are seeking justice and accountability, not revenge."

A judge sentenced the former Rutgers University student to 30 days in jail and three years of probation for spying on his gay roommate with a webcam. NBC's Mara Schiavocampo reports.

The family spoke about their long-running ordeal as the media and several court hearings picked apart every detail of Tyler's last days.

"My world came crumbling apart in September 2010,? Tyler's mother Jane Clementi said, adding that Ravi had come to Rutgers with preconceived notions about her son.

"He never really knew Tyler," she said, describing the day she helped her son move into his new room at Rutgers, when Ravi ignored Tyler.

"He could never have known the viper?s nest he was walking into,? Tyler's brother James Clementi told the court, adding that an apology from Ravi would now be empty and spoken without empathy.

"I love my brother and I will mourn for him every day for the rest of my life,? he said.

The court also heard a statement from "MB,"?the man who was watched via webcam as he kissed Clementi. MB described his emotional pain and a combination of embarrassment, emptiness and fear in the wake of Clementi's death and subsequent court proceedings.

"I do wonder if it has ever entered [Ravi's] mind that he has caused me a great deal of pain, and yet he knows nothing about me," MB's statement read.

Ravi did not wish to address the court, but both of his parents spoke, expressing their belief in the American justice system.

In her grief-stricken statement, which was often interrupted by tears and sobs, Dharun's mother Sabitha Ravi told the court his son's life and health have been devastated by the events that occurred over the past 20 months.

She said her son now only eats one meal a day, and has lost more than 25 pounds.

"He was absolutely devastated and broken into pieces,? Sabitha Ravi told the court, as she wiped away tears.

"Dharun?s dreams are shattered and he has been living in hell for the past 20 months," she added, hugging her son after finishing her statement.

Dharun Ravi also cried.

"Contrary to the false propaganda, we are not a homophobic family," Dharun's father Ravi Pazhani told the court. "Dharun was not raised to hate gays."

As the hearing began, the judge noted the court had received letters and petitions asking that Ravi be pardoned. Gay activists also made public pleas for leniency in recent days.

Ravi must report to Middlesex Adult Correctional Center on May 31.

Apple's Next Assault: Video Gaming | Red Sea Oasis

The news turned out to be rumor, at least according to Valve, which vehemently denied the visit had occurred. In the two weeks since then, Apple stock has been on a roller coaster, while the company delivered Q2 results that crushed analyst expectations.

Still, whether Valve is involved or not, look for video-game consoles to be in Apple?s crosshairs. After all, the total world market for video games is expected to be $81 billion by 2016, with console sales are pegged at $36 billion that year. Its estimated that the global market for connected, smart TVs will grow from 100 million today to over 500 million by 2016.

Here?s how the current video game console market looks. Keep in mind, video gaming in general is on a down cycle right now. Current-generation consoles are getting long in the tooth, fewer titles are being released and gamers seem to be waiting to see what will happen next.

Microsoft (Xbox 360)

  • 66 million units sold.
  • Xbox Live network has 40 million users
  • Latest figures have Xbox division revenue down at $1.62 billion for Q3, but in Q2 holiday sales had boosted that to $4.24 billion.

Sony (Playstation 3)

  • 62 million units sold.
  • PSN (Playstation network) has 90 million users (includes accounts registered to Sony portable gaming devices).
  • Sony gaming revenue is down considerably as part of its horrible year.

Nintendo (Wii)

  • 96 million units sold.
  • New Wii U console due by the end of 2012.
  • For fiscal year 2011, Nintendo its reported first-ever annual loss of $532.5 million (on $8 billion in revenue, which includes both the Wii and its portable gaming system).

Apple seemingly came out of nowhere to completely disrupt the mobile gaming market that had been dominated by Nintendo and to a lesser extent Sony, for the past decade. Sales of video games through the Apple?s App Store, estimated to be in the $900 million range in 2010, surged to $2 billion in 2011. With hundreds of millions of iOS mobile devices and tens of thousands of 99-cent games, Apple has turned the mobile gaming market upside down to become a major player if not the market leader.

What about the living room? Putting the pieces together, we have a worldwide installed base of current game consoles that?s well over 200 million units. We know that gamers have been willing to pay anywhere from $100 to $500 or more (at launch) for these systems. We know that the three current console makers are seeing declining sales (projected to become a 20% slump in 2012) as consumers appear to be hunkering down and waiting for the next generation of systems. That?s 200 million or more systems that need to be replaced soon.

Another factor is the cost of console video-game titles. Popular titles like Activision?s (NASDAQ:ATVI) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare can move 6.5 million copies on launch day despite a $60 price tag. One of the ways Apple has been killing traditional portable gaming systems has been its App Store?s wealth of titles and bargain-basement prices that make it tough to justify a $30 game cartridge for a Nintendo 3DS.

The Right Combination

The million (or multibillion) dollar question is, will Apple pull the trigger?

It has tried to entering the home gaming market before, with the dismally selling Pippin. That device, which Apple launched in 1995 and killed in 1997, was sold in partnership with Bandai for $600. A total of 100,000 units were produced. It holds spot No. 22 on PC World?s list of the ?25 Worst Tech Products of All Time.?

The company?s other foray into the living room the Apple TV set-top streaming box has been more successful (1.4 million of the $99 devices sold during the last holiday season), but those are pretty minuscule numbers compared to the 35 million iPhones and 12 million or so iPads Apple moved last quarter at roughly $600 and $500 a pop, respectively.

The answer may lie in a combination of the Apple TV, the App Store and the long rumored iTV (or Apple TV), along with a generous dollop of Apple?s need to enter new markets.

The pieces are all there. Apple has proven that its hardware can run compelling games, it has the necessary online distribution network and a revenue model that supports selling a large library of inexpensive games. Adding these capabilities to a forthcoming TV set would be a no-brainer, especially since consumers expect so-called smart TVs to become the norm.

Another Disruption

Apple?s explosive stock price is at least partially the result of highly successful launches into new markets. It wasn?t gangbusters like this when the company was primarily a computer seller. But the iPod disrupted then ruled the portable music business, the iPhone did likewise in the mobile phone industry and the iPad is practically the only game in town in the red-hot tablet market.

To continue this growth Apple can?t coast on being great at computers, music, smartphones and tablets it has to look to the next market it can disrupt and conquer.

A combination Apple TV and game console in the living room has the potential to upend both existing markets, with a good chunk of revenue up for grabs. As an added bonus, doing so would boost the number of living room devices pointed at Apple?s iTunes video-streaming service, pushing App Store revenues even higher.

The living room is looking like Apple?s next big, juicy target.

Romney keeps media at bay as he sticks to script

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is trying harder than ever these days to stay on script ? and keep his traveling national press corps at arm's length.

The latest clash came Wednesday when aides to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee blocked the reporters who cover Romney daily from asking him questions at the "rope line" separating him and his supporters.

The incident was a prime example of the pattern of tense interactions with the press that have marked the Romney campaign for months. The candidate often seems eager to chat about mundane things ? the food on the charter airplane, whether he has a lucky tie ? with a press corps he's come to know well and readily recognizes.

But his staff frequently limits access to a candidate known for making awkward, if not politically troublesome, statements during unscripted moments ? and Romney very rarely answers challenging questions on the issues of the day as he campaigns.

"You have some work to do here," Romney told reporters on his campaign plane, waving at a basket of snacks as he selected a package of Grandma's Vanilla Cream sandwich cookies.

But asked a question about Vice President Joe Biden's attacks on his record at Bain Capital during a speech in Ohio, the former Massachusetts governor simply said: "No interviews."

Instead, Romney did a lengthy interview with Ed Morrissey, a conservative blogger.

It's a window into how he might conduct himself as president. After he was elected governor of Massachusetts, for example, Romney closed off a set of public elevators in the Boston statehouse and prohibited press access to the lobby outside the governor's office. The area was previously open to the press, and his successor, Gov. Deval Patrick, re-opened the elevator and the lobby after he took office.

Wednesday's incident came after Romney delivered brief remarks to Florida supporters and walked over to where supporters were cordoned off and waiting to meet him. A group of reporters left an area designated for the media and tried to get within earshot of Romney when a campaign staffer put out her arms to keep reporters from walking past her.

After a brief standoff, reporters from a number of national outlets circumvented the staffers and moved close enough to hear Romney.

A few hours later, Romney's campaign acknowledged a mistake.

"This was an error on the part of the campaign staff and volunteers. We have reminded them that press is allowed on the rope line to record the governor's interactions with voters," spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in a statement.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan, making clear the agency wasn't responsible for the policy, said: "The Secret Service does not restrict movement of the press into a general public area or their movement within the general public area."

Rope lines are a staple of political campaigns, but a candidate's presence there can lead to some memorable moments ? and Romney has sometimes been candid in such situations. As Democrats marked the anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden, Romney told traveling reporters that "even Jimmy Carter" would have made that decision ? a sharp quip that the campaign later softened as they muted their criticism of the Obama team's focus on the occasion.

And earlier this year, Romney was on a rope line during the Daytona 500 when an Associated Press reporter asked him about his familiarity with the sport.

"I have some friends who are NASCAR team owners," he said, a comment that later drew criticism from Democrats seeking to cast him as out of touch.

Trying to control a campaign's message isn't unique to Romney's campaign. White House reporters traveling with Obama sometimes are limited in how they can approach the president on a rope line. Still, reporters are able to observe Obama interacting with voters on airport tarmacs when he walks over to greet waiting crowds.

Obama often doesn't answer questions on rope lines, though he sometimes will chat with reporters. He recently told some that he won a basketball game he played with actors George Clooney and Tobey Maguire. The president prefers taking questions in formal interview settings.

Romney rarely does interviews with print media, preferring conservative broadcast outlets. He also regularly tapes interviews with local TV and radio reporters when he visits different states. But he doesn't often allow himself to be grilled by the reporters who know him and his record best and who tend to ask the toughest questions.

The campaign also limits opportunities to watch Romney interact with voters. It says he regularly meets with middle-class families before events, but those meetings always take place in private. The campaign does not release the names of those attending.

His campaign insists that almost all interactions between reporters and campaign staff be either anonymous or completely off the record. And he's only just now starting to allow his traveling press corps to share his campaign plane regularly. News organizations that travel with presidential candidates pay their own way, including plane fare, meals, hotels and other expenses, often thousands of dollars per day.

His aides are tight-lipped on even the most mundane issues, like travel logistics. And they are visibly averse to allowing the candidate to step into unscripted situations.

Even Romney finds a little humor in the sometimes tense relationship. While talking to reporters at the rear of his plane recently, Romney looked a few rows back at Rick Gorka, his traveling press secretary. "Rick is about to pass out. Gorka is," he said with a laugh and added, as if speaking for Gorka, "'What are you doing?'"

Gorka responded by waving his hand in a "wrap it up" motion.

Sacha Baron Cohen talks terrorists, Seacrest

By Ree Hines

Sacha Baron Cohen is no stranger to the big or the small screens, but it's a rare treat for fans to see the actor out of character. On Wednesday morning, for only the third time in his career, the man behind "Da Ali G Show," "Borat" and "Bruno" left his alter egos behind and spoke for himself.

Cohen, who was in Cannes promoting his latest film, "The Dictator," explained to TODAY's Ann Curry just why that's such a rare event.

"Well, the movies that I did up until now, they involved real people and so we wanted to limit the exposure of for lawsuits -- at the moment I think I have the Guinness World Record for most sued actor in history," he said with a smile. "But basically if people saw that I was me, and that Borat was not a real person, beforehand, then they could injunct the movie and shut the movie down."

But with the purely fictional "Dictator," that's not a problem.

"This is a different kind of movie," he assured.

But not so different when it comes to getting laughs at the expense of others -- of course in this case, the others aren't people on the street.

"The subjects of the satire are all of these heartless dictators who are feared in their own countries and rule with, you know, using violence and oppression, but are ludicrous characters," Cohen explained. "And the great thing is, at the moment, they're being overthrown. So anything you can do to mock them and undermine them that kind of false authority, I think it's a positive thing."

Which explains his over-the-top lead role as Supreme Leader Aladeen of the Republic of Wadiya -- a part he researched, but not quite as thoroughly as other parts in the past.

"It kind of backfired on 'Bruno,' because I had a terrorist group come after me," Cohen revealed. "And, you know, (they) decided to seek their revenge. But they haven't got me yet. That's why I'm here -- hiding in Cannes."

Of course, Cohen hides in plain sight often, thanks to those characters he usually takes with him. That's how he's able to pull off pranks, like his now-infamous stunt at the 2012 Oscars in which he dumped an urn of ashes all over Ryan Seacrest -- right on the red carpet. But no worries, he made up for that by buying Seacrest a brand new jacket.

"And it had a little label inside -- 'Made by slave child labor,'" Cohen joked. "But he didn't send me a thank you note. Unbelievable."

"The Dictator" opens in theaters nationwide May 16.

Do you think Cohen should show fans the man behind the characters more often? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Beverly Hills Immigration Law: The Rise of Legal Immigration From ...

The Atlantic: A recent Pew Hispanic Center report highlights the rather steep declines in the number of Mexicans coming to the United States, as well as the rising numbers leaving for Mexico. Taken together, they show that net migration from 2005 to 2010 reached zero--with inflows and outflows of some 1.4 million individuals (a rough average of 280,000 a year) cancelling each other out. This is a huge migratory shift, and one that reflects many things, including a weaker U.S. economy, a stronger Mexican economy, changing Mexican demographics, rising deportations, and enhanced border security.

Another migratory change has also occurred: of the Mexicans that still come to the United States, many more do so legally. At the start of the twenty-first century, less than 10 percent came with papers. A decade later, it is 50 percent.

The vast majority of these came on "family reunification visas"--spouses, parents, children, or siblings of U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. Others--some ninety thousand in 2011--came on H-visas to work, their professions ranging from engineers to agricultural workers. Ten thousand more came to study. Some two thousand--more than double 2000 levels--came on E-2 NAFTA visas, reserved for investors and business people from countries that are U.S. trading partners. Mexicans also received their highest ever number of EB-5 visas, which require a $500,000 to $1 million investment in a U.S. business, and the creation of at least ten U.S. jobs.

The rise in legal immigration has the potential to alter the political debate, as it lessens the law and order challenges. But some will still be concerned about the role of this large group of immigrants, believing as the late Harvard professor Samuel P. Huntington did, that Mexican immigrants "threaten to divide the United States into two peoples, two cultures, and two languages." Perhaps a final trend can help allay these worries. In the past decade, one million Mexicans swore their allegiance to the U.S. and became citizens--surpassing all other nationalities--a sure sign of their desire to become Americans.

Ultra-Targeted Advertising: Man Uses Pandora For Marriage Proposal

pandora proposalWhen I was younger, my parents liked to listen to the big soft rock stations in Los Angeles. Once in a while, the sappy love songs would be interrupted by an emotional song dedication from a boy/girlfriend to their significant other. It was awkward, but also kind of beautiful. But mostly awkward. Now it sounds like Pandora has made an impressive gesture toward keeping that tradition alive, while also demonstrating the power of its ad targeting.

CloudOn brings its Office to Android tablets, adds support for Google Drive (video)

Indirectly or not, the other guys seem to enjoy their time spent with CloudOn's unorthodox delivery of Microsoft Office. Fortunately for you, the service just announced it's now available to the Android folk -- at least to those with a Google certified slate. The CloudOn application comes as a freebie and it's compatible with tablets running Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich. Take-Two delays 'BioShock Infinite' to February

(AP) ? Take-Two has delayed the release of "BioShock Infinite," an eagerly awaited shooter game set in 1912.

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. said Wednesday that the game will launch on Feb. 26, rather than in October. Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational Games, the developer of "BioShock," says the game is delayed so its creators can get more time to work on it.

"BioShock Infinite" will be the third installment in the popular series. The first "BioShock" launched in 2007 and was well-received by critics and players alike. It was an early sign that Take-Two was moving beyond its one-hit-wonder status, in which it relies on the wildly popular "Grand Theft Auto" games.

"Infinite" is set in the early 20th century in a floating city called Columbia, built by the U.S. government.
