Two weeks ago I announced the posting of ?In the News? food drink and the South Florida lifestyle?. This week we?ve got some news to report from interesting press releases coming out. Before we get to the ?news? for those of you who missed the intro and reasoning behind this post the first time around here is the introduction once again:

In the beginning chapters of my book, the?Food Lovers? Guide to Miami & Fort Lauderdale?I explain how one would keep up with?Food & Beverage News?in South Florida (page 7). No one person, website or publication can be the sole source of information; eating, drinking, dining and nightlife in South Florida is vast to say the least and with its continuum of?openings, closings and shuffling going on, it makes keeping up mind boggling.

There are blogger sites focusing on food and beverage niche topics, such as,?Worst Pizza,?SushiPro,?Burger Beast,?Jeff Eats,?French Fry Fairy?and?South Florida Beer Blog, they are competent resources for the information you seek as well as the all encompassing curator site?South Florida Daily Blog?of?which I read and use for updates as well as a host of other sites that are detailed in my book. The information on the food and drink centric sites come from visiting the venue, working with the product or establishment or a press release. Cooking better biochar: Study improves recipe for soil additive

ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2012) ? Backyard gardeners who make their own charcoal soil additives, or biochar, should take care to heat their charcoal to at least 450 degrees Celsius to ensure that water and nutrients get to their plants, according to a new study by Rice University scientists.

The study, published this week in the Journal of Biomass and Bioenergy, is timely because biochar is attracting thousands of amateur and professional gardeners, and some companies are also scaling up industrial biochar production.

"When it's done right, adding biochar to soil can improve hydrology and make more nutrients available to plants," said Rice biogeochemist Caroline Masiello, the lead researcher on the new study.

The practice of adding biochar to topsoil to boost crop growth goes back centuries, but in recent years, international interest groups have begun touting biochar's climate benefits as well. Biochar removes carbon from the atmosphere and locks it into the soil for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years.

With companies scaling up production and dozens of do-it-yourself videos online showing how to make biochar at home, Masiello said it is important for scientists to study examine how biochar is produced and learn which methods produce the best biochar.

In their study, Masiello's team learned that when it comes to helping get water to plants, not all forms of biochar are the same. The researchers found charcoal produced at temperatures of 450 Celsius or higher was most likely to improve soil drainage and make more water available to plants, while charcoal produced at lower temperatures could sometimes repel water.

Rice's award-winning biochar research group examined the hydrologic properties of biochar produced at various temperatures from three kinds of feedstock -- tree leaves, corn stalks and wood chips. For all feedstocks, the researchers found that biochar produced at temperatures above 450 degrees Celsius (842 degrees Fahrenheit) had optimal properties for improving soil drainage and storing carbon.

The research team included Rice undergraduate Tim Kinney, Bellaire High School science teacher Michelle Dean and Rice faculty members, Brandon Dugan, assistant professor of Earth science, and Kyriacos Zygourakis, the A.J. Hartsook Professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Other team members were William Hockaday, now an assistant professor of geology at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and Rebecca T. Barnes, now a visiting assistant professor at Bard College in Annandale-on-the-Hudson, New York.

Making charcoal may sound like a strange way to boost crop production, but the concept was proven more than 2,000 years ago in South America, where native farmers added charcoal to the poor soils of the Amazon rainforest to create a rich, fertile soil known by the Portuguese name "terra preta," or black earth. These modified soils, which are still fertile today, contain as much as 35 percent of their organic carbon in the form of charcoal. Studies over the past decade have found that the charcoal-amended soil holds more water and nutrients and also makes the water and nutrients readily available to plants.

The charcoal, or biochar, that is used to create such soil can be made from wood or agricultural byproducts. The key is to heat the material to a high temperature in an oxygen-starved environment. Native Americans did that by burying the material in pits, where it burned for days. Today, industrial-scale biochar production is beginning to occur, and dozens of do-it-yourself videos online show how to make biochar in just a few hours using steel drums.

The agricultural benefits of biochar are just one reason there's a groundswell of interest in biochar production. Some enthusiasts are drawn by a desire to fight global warming. That's because about half of the carbon from wood chips, corn stalks and other biomass -- carbon that typically gets recycled into the atmosphere -- can be locked away inside biochar for thousands of years.

"When people mow their yards here in Houston, the carbon from the grass clippings returns to the atmosphere in about six weeks," said Masiello, assistant professor of Earth science at Rice. "We call this carbon-cycling, and it's a universal process. Making biochar is one way to remove carbon from the atmosphere and lock it away for a long time."

Masiello, who specializes in studying the carbon cycle, said the microscopic properties of biochar can vary widely depending upon how it's made. In the worst case, she said, improperly made biochar can harm soil rather than improve it.

"This is the first rigorous study of the hydrologic aspects of biochar," Masiello said. "People often tout the benefits of biochar; it can help clay-rich soils drain better, and it can help sandy soils hold water better. But we are finding that these hydrologic benefits vary widely with biochar production conditions."

She said the study found that biochar produced at temperatures lower than 450 degrees Celsius retained some organic compounds that can actually repel water rather than attract it. In addition, the study found that lower-temperature biochar was a less stable reservoir for carbon and could return significant amounts of carbon to the atmosphere within a few hundred years.

"We plan to study ways to optimize other beneficial properties of biochar, including its ability to remove heavy metals and other pollutants from soil," Masiello said. "Ultimately, we'd like to publish a how-to guide that would show exactly what conditions are needed to produce the optimal biochar for a given situation."

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC) have found evidence that, in addition to affecting the heart, brain and nervous system, bisphenol A (BPA), could affect a mammal's ability to reproduce by altering the structure of the uterus in ways that can progress to a potentially fatal infection.

These findings are published in March 9, 2012, advance online edition of the Journal of Reproductive Toxicology.

Infection and inflammation of the uterus, or pyometra, is most commonly seen in animals like dogs and cats but can also affect humans. It is a result of hormonal and structural changes in the uterus lining and can be deadly if left untreated.

BPA is an industrial chemical and environmental pollutant found in many hard plastic products.

"This condition can be caused by chronic exposure to estrogens; however, it is unknown whether estrogenic endocrine disruptors, like bisphenol A, can cause pyometra," says Scott Belcher, PhD, professor in the department of pharmacology and cell biophysics and principal investigator on the study. "We wanted to see if dietary exposures to BPA induced the condition in animal models of differing sensitivity to estrogens."

Researchers in this study exposed the models to different dietary doses of BPA in their food, ranging from four to more than 4,000 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day, or 17?-ethinyl estradiol (EE), a semi-synthetic steroidal estrogen, in doses of one to greater than 150 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day. A control group received no dose of BPA or EE.

"Using two different strains of mouse models, we monitored to see which doses of endocrine disruptors affected which strains," Belcher explains. "In a commonly used strain of mice, C57BL/6, pyometra occurred with 15 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day of EE and 33 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day of the BPA treatment groups."

He continues that at the effective concentration of BPA, immune cell numbers in the uteri of the C57BL/6 strain animals exposed were increased five-fold compared with control animals. In a different strain of mouse (CD1), a similar increase in immune cell numbers required 100 times greater exposure.

"These results suggest that BPA enhances the immune responsiveness of the uterus and that the heightened responsiveness in the C57BL/6 strain of females is related to increased susceptibility to pyometra," he says.

Belcher adds that the reason for this study was to compare appropriate concentrations of dietary estrogenic chemicals to allow reproduction?not to determine whether or not BPA had specific effects on reproduction or fertility.

"However, in the case where food consumption is altered and reproduction was completely blocked, some interesting and valuable insight to the impact of these dietary estrogens is possible," he says. "It seems likely that the immunologic and structural differences between the strains indicate a potential key difference in susceptibility to developing pyometra, which is related to the immune response. We are extremely interested in understanding why some strains or individuals are insensitive to the effects of endocrine disruptors, while others are resistant to the harmful actions of these chemicals.

"The results here suggest that pyometra in the C57BL/6 strain might serve as a sensitive endpoint for understanding the mechanisms responsible for the impact of estrogen and estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals on reproduction and also immunity. Further studies using the C57BL/6 strain might serve as a useful model of sensitive subpopulations at risk for developing immunological disorders related to exposures to estrogen disruptors like BPA."

When most people look at sharks, they'd be hard-pressed to find any redeeming features. Many of them have ferocious jaws, sandpapery skin, and frightening senses that can zero in on their hidden prey. Their best assets, in other words, are threats to our existence.

But these predatory advantages hold the promise of engineering solutions that could help sustain ? rather rather than kill ? humans. Their hardened skin has inspired faster ships; their ability to detect weak vibrations underwater may eventually yield a better battery. The movie Jaws convinced us that sharks are unparalleled stalkers, but it failed to capture how these skills could apply to our daily existence.

The field of biomimicry, imitating a natural process for human purposes, has existed for decades. In 1948, Swiss inventor George de Mestral took a hike in the Alps with his dog, and after they both returned covered in burrs, de Mestral examined the seed sacs under a microscope. He mimicked the mechanism they used to attach themselves to softer surfaces ? firm hooks paired with loops ? to create Velcro, the ubiquitous fastener that has practically eliminated the need for children in developed countries to learn to tie their shoelaces.

But in recent years the idea has taken on more urgency, especially among environmentalists. According to the fossil record, the historic rate of extinction was roughly one species per million before humans started having a major impact on the planet; experts such as biologist E.O. Wilson estimate that humans have accelerated this rate by a factor of at least 1,000, if not 10,000. Roughly one-third of all shark species worldwide face some threat of extinction , according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Worth saving

People are moved by the plight of endangered animals, but that sympathy typically does not amount to much. Biomimicry offers a new way to save animals like sharks, by appealing to humanity's profit-minded nature. If plant and animal species can inspire technological innovation, points out the UN Environmental Programme's Nick Nutall, they can earn their keep: "In a world fascinated by GDP, if you cannot demonstrate the value of nature it's always going to be subject to the ups and downs and vagaries of nations' economies," he says.

The list of possible breakthroughs inspired by shark physiology is a lengthy one.In addition to boasting all of the ordinary senses that humans have, sharks possess something called electroreception. A row of small holes that runs from head to tail picks up weak vibrations. This network, along with tiny, fluid-filled sacs in their snouts and chins known as ampullae of Lorenzini, helps sharks find fish buried in the sand because they can detect the electromagnetic fields generated by a fish's beating heart or gills. Other fish have a lateral line to sense movement, but they do not have the gelatinous material that serves as a conductor for electric vibrations, radiating these signals out to a shark's nervous system. Scientists across the United States are hoping to capitalize on sharks' unique voltage-charged gel for practical purposes.

University of San Francisco physics professor Brandon R. Brown has extracted the material from dead sharks to gauge its thermal sensitivity, while Case Western Reserve University nanoengineering professor Alexis Abramson has explored developing a synthetic gel with similar thermoelectric properties that could be used to convert waste heat, from devices such as a car engine, into usable electricity.

Then there are sharks' denticles, otherwise known as "skin teeth", which cover their bodies. Made up of crowns covered with hard enamel, they reduce friction by forcing the water to flow in channels, allowing sharks to move swiftly through the water. The type of denticles a shark has depends on the species: Lighter denticles maximize a shark's speed while providing slightly less protection from a predatory attack. Basking sharks have crowns that point in all directions, while short-fin mako sharks ? some of the fastest swimmers in the sea ? have smaller, lighter denticles. They are as strong as steel and carry an added benefit: By minimizing water turbulence, they allow sharks to hunt better by moving through the sea in near silence.

Ralph Liedert, a researcher at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen, Germany, pioneered the idea of covering ships with artificial sharkskin to help them move smoothly by dramatically reducing biofouling (not to be confused with the more familiar biofueling). Biofouling, which occurs when barnacles, mussels, and algae latch onto ships, increases a vessel's drag resistance by as much as 15 percent. Liedert has produced an imitation sharkskin from elastic silicone that would reduce this fouling by 67 per cent, and he estimates that once a ship reached four to five knots, nearly all of these creatures would fly off the hull's surface.

Smelling in stereo

Researchers from Mote Marine Laboratory's Center for Shark Research are looking at other aspects of how sharks operate. Along with scientists at Boston University's marine program, they've learned that sharks hunt prey by sensing the differences when their smell hits each nostril ? they call it "smelling in stereo." In time, they hope to apply this steering algorithm to odour-guided robots that track oil plumes and chemical leaks underwater.
